Custom homes for Clinton, river to ridge.
One builder from the first call to the final walk-through. Collin has eleven years behind him and builds every Clinton home himself, with his crew, on your schedule and your ground.
Clinton is a Mississippi River town, the county seat, and its housing runs older than most of eastern Iowa. Buyers here fall into two camps: those who want to build fresh on a riverfront lot with a view of the water, and those trading up to acreage on the higher ground west of town toward DeWitt, where a new custom home can sit on open land instead of a narrow city parcel.
NXT Build builds for both. Owner Collin runs the project from the first site walk-through to the final key handoff. No handoff to a project manager. No crew that never saw the plan. One phone number and one email address for the whole build.
Collin spent eleven years running builds for another contractor in eastern Iowa before starting NXT Build, and he started it because he knew the work could be done better. Cleaner job sites. Tighter schedules. Honest answers about cost and timeline. One person who answers the phone and stays on the project from the first call through the final walk-through. On a custom home, which is the biggest thing most families ever build, that continuity is not a nicety. It is the whole difference between a build you endure and one you look back on glad you did.
What Clinton custom home buyers tend to be after.
Most of the custom home customers we meet around Clinton start from one of three places. They own a lot, sometimes right on the river, and want to build from scratch. They have a rough plan from an architect and need a builder who will execute it cleanly. Or they have carried a picture of their home in their head for years and want someone who listens before opening the proposal software.
All three are the same job to us. We start with the site walk-through. On a Clinton riverfront lot that means looking hard at grade, drainage, and how high the finished floor needs to sit relative to the water. On acreage west of town it means soil, setbacks, and orientation. From there we draw up the plan and price it as one fixed number, and you have every line of that number in hand before you sign anything.
The site walk is also where we listen, and on a custom home that matters more than any spec sheet. We want to know how you actually live before we draw a plan around a lot. Where the morning coffee happens, whether you cook for a crowd, how many people come through the mudroom on a Clinton winter morning, where you want the light. A custom home is only worth building if it fits the people in it, and the only way to build that is to understand them first. That conversation, on your ground, is what separates a home built for you from a floor plan pulled off a shelf.
Flood-aware siting on the Clinton riverfront.
Building close to the Mississippi is not the same as building on a subdivision pad. The first thing we settle on a riverfront lot is finished-floor elevation and how the site drains in a wet spring. We check the flood mapping, set the foundation type and height to keep living space out of harm’s way, and grade the lot so water leaves the building instead of pooling against it. Getting elevation and drainage right at the start is what keeps a Clinton riverfront home dry for the length of the mortgage.
The home itself then gets built for where it sits. A Clinton riverfront home takes wind and moisture off the water that an inland home never sees, so we detail the wall assembly, the window installations, and the roof edges for that exposure rather than for a sheltered lot. We orient the house to capture the river view where it matters most, then spec the glazing and the insulation so the water-facing rooms are comfortable through a Clinton winter, not just gorgeous in June. The view is the whole reason to build there, and building it right means the view never costs you comfort the rest of the year.
How the build runs in Clinton County.
Permits inside Clinton go through the city; builds on county ground go through the county office. Collin handles the permit application, the setback variances when needed, and the inspection scheduling either way. You do not manage the county. You manage your build with us. Construction typically runs six to nine months for a standard custom home depending on site prep, foundation, and finish selections. We build the schedule into the fixed-price contract so you know what you are paying and when each phase closes. When it is done, we walk through together, every open item goes on a written punch list, and nothing is handed off until it is right. We are licensed, insured, and five-star rated on Google and Facebook. We also build barndominiums and post-frame structures for buyers who want a shop or ag building on the same Clinton County property. See finished work in our project gallery.
The NXT Build process for Clinton custom homes.
Site walk-through
Collin visits your lot in Clinton or out toward DeWitt. No charge. On the river we look hard at elevation and drainage; on acreage we look at soil, setbacks, and orientation. You tell us how you want to live in the space.
Fixed-price quote
After the walk-through, we put together a written plan and a fixed-price quote. No vague range. No surprise line items at the end. You see the number before anything is signed.
Permits and prep
We file the permit with Clinton or Clinton County, schedule inspections, and handle any variances or flood-elevation requirements. You do not manage the county paperwork.
Build and final walk
Collin runs the crew on your lot himself. At completion, we walk through together and close out every item on the punch list before the keys change hands.
