Dubuque County is home ground for us. Zwingle sits on the county’s southern line, so most job sites here are a short drive from home base, and that closeness shows up in how fast we can be on site when something comes up.
The east side is the city of Dubuque, built into the bluffs above the Mississippi. Lots there are steep and tight. An addition on a Dubuque hillside can mean a walkout on one end and a full story of foundation on the other, plus a narrow street where every concrete truck and lumber drop has to be planned. Asbury, just west of the city, has newer neighborhoods with more room, where an attached garage or a second-story addition fits the lot without a fight.
Follow Highway 20 west through Peosta, Epworth, and Farley on toward Dyersville, and the ground gives way to farm country. Cascade sits to the southwest on Highway 151. Out here it is acreages and working farms, which means post-frame: shops, machine sheds, pole barns, and barndominiums. Collin built post-frame for 11 years before he started NXT Build, so this is the work he knows best.
House work comes up in the farm towns too. An older farmhouse outside Epworth or Farley might need a main-floor master suite or a bigger kitchen, and the addition has to tie into a structure that has stood for generations without looking bolted on.
Eastern Iowa winters are hard on a roof. Heavy snow sits for weeks, ice builds up in the valleys, and summer storms can peel shingles off a house in an afternoon. We handle roofing across the county, from full tear-offs and architectural shingles to standing seam metal on shops and storm-damage repairs once the weather clears.
Permits change from one town to the next. The City of Dubuque runs its own building permits and inspections, the smaller towns each have their own rules, and unincorporated ground falls to the county. We sort out which office covers your project, pull the permits, and book the inspections so the build does not sit idle waiting on a sign-off.
Being close also helps when weather turns. If a storm rolls in halfway through framing, the crew can get back out fast to cover open walls and check the site. You get a schedule at the start, and you hear from Collin directly if anything moves.
Before you call about a Dubuque County build
Which Dubuque County towns do you build in?
Dubuque, Peosta, Asbury, Farley, Epworth, Dyersville, and Cascade, plus the rural ground between them. Zwingle sits right on the county line, so none of these is a long trip for us.
Can you build on a steep lot in Dubuque?
Yes. A bluff lot needs its foundation and drainage planned around the slope, and walkout basements are common on those sites. We look at the grade, delivery access, and how close the neighbors are before anything gets drawn.
Do I need a permit for a pole barn on my acreage near Dyersville?
That depends on where the land sits and how the building will be used. Ag buildings and homes are not always handled the same way, and city and county rules differ. We check what applies to your parcel and pull whatever is required.
Should a house in western Dubuque County be post-frame or stick-built?
Either can work. A barndominium uses a post-frame shell with a finished interior, while a traditional house over a basement is usually stick-framed, and we do both. The right answer comes down to your design and how you plan to live in it.
Do you do roof replacements and storm repairs in Dubuque County?
Yes. Full tear-offs, architectural shingles, standing seam metal, and storm-damage repairs on homes and commercial buildings. Since we are close by, we can get out to look at the damage soon after a storm passes.
How soon can you start on my project?
That depends on the size of the job and how long permits take. The first step is a call to (563) 581-3819. Collin returns every call within 24 hours, meets you at the site, and gives you a schedule before any work begins.
