Monticello is our Jones County town. The drive from Zwingle runs west through farm country, and the Maquoketa River runs right through Monticello itself. Out here the calls are mostly about open land: a house on an acreage, a machine shed beside the field, a shop big enough to pull a truck and a trailer inside.
Because Monticello is one of the longer drives on our list, we plan a Jones County job in solid blocks. Materials get staged on site, the crew works full days, and fewer hours go to the road. That matters on a post-frame building, where a good week of weather is when the posts and trusses go up.
Open farmland changes how a building should sit. With few trees to break it, winter wind carries snow across the fields and piles it against anything in its way. A big sliding or overhead door on the windward wall turns into a shovel job every storm, so we talk through door placement, driveway approach, and where the drifts will land before the site is staked. We also look at drainage. A shed floor set low will collect water off a plowed field in spring.
Barndominiums are a good fit for this kind of ground. You get a post-frame shell with wide spans, room for equipment on one side, and finished living space on the other. People tend to overlook moisture. A metal roof over a heated space needs the right insulation and a vapor plan, or it drips. Collin built post-frame for 11 years before starting NXT Build, and getting that detail right is a big piece of why the shell holds up.
In town, the work looks different. Older Monticello homes come to us for additions: a master suite, a second story, or a sunroom off the back. Tying new framing into an old house means checking what is actually behind the walls and matching rooflines so the addition looks like it was always there.
Timing matters on a working farm. If the new machine shed has to be ready before harvest, or the site can only be torn up after planting is done, tell us on the first call. We build the schedule around your season, and we keep the work area cleaned up so your equipment can still move.
On permits, a lot inside Monticello goes through the city, and rural ground goes through the county, which keeps its offices in Anamosa, the county seat. We sort that out before you get a number from us. Collin comes out to see the spot first, and you deal with him from the first call through the final walk-through.
Questions from Jones County landowners
Do you really travel from Zwingle to Monticello?
Yes. Monticello sits inside our 80-mile service radius, and we build custom homes, post-frame buildings, additions, and roofs there. Collin comes out to see the site before anything gets drawn up.
Where do permits come from on a rural Jones County build?
A lot inside Monticello goes through the city, and rural ground goes through the county offices in Anamosa. We check what applies to your parcel and your building type before we price the job.
Can you build a barndominium on my acreage?
Yes. A barndominium is a post-frame shell with finished living space inside, and post-frame is Collin’s specialty from 11 years running a crew. We handle the shell and the interior, so you only work with one contractor.
Where should a machine shed or shop sit on my land?
Somewhere it stays dry and the doors stay usable in winter. We look at drainage, how the wind drifts snow across your field, and how equipment will get in and out. Then we set the building where it works for you.
Do you build commercial buildings around Monticello?
Yes. We build workshops, ag buildings, and light commercial structures. Post-frame works well for that kind of building because it gives you a wide open floor without interior walls in the way.
How soon will I hear back after I call?
Collin returns every call within 24 hours. Call 563-581-3819, tell him where the building is going, and he will set up a time to come see it.
